January is the time to renew your dahlia society membership and pay yearly dues to help sustain our organization. If you joined the Lane County Dahlia Society after September 1st 2010, then your dues are good thru 2011. We encourage members to join the American Dahlia Society and the Pacific Northwest Dahlia Conference as well.

Lane County Dahlia Society Dues are $10 per person, $15 each family; Members receive 11 issues of our newsletter The Dahlia Data

American Dahlia Society $24 per person, $27 for a family. Members receive the quarterly ADS Bulletin and the 2010 Classification Guild. The Bulletin contains timely articles pertaining to dahlias, information on new cultivars, and a host of other topics. The Classification book is indispensable as a guide that states which cultivars performed well in your region and lists winning varieties from around the nation. The ADS provides a great service to all dahlia enthusiasts at a bargain price.

Pacific Northwest Dahlia Conference $10 per person or $15 for a family. The PNDS hosts 3 trial gardens: Inland Empire Garden in Spokane, Canby Trial Garden in Canby, Oregon & the Victoria Trial Garden on Canada's Vancouver Island. The PNDS provides training for judges, maintains records for all member societies, and sponsors an annual show. Each member of the PNDS receives 3 newsletters a year, a membership booklet, and an exhibiting number.

November Meeting

Our November dahlia meeting will be held Wednesday, November 9th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. The topic of this meeting will be the proper digging, dividing, and storage of dahlia tubers. Society members will be set up at many work stations, giving hands-on demonstrations of tuber dividing. This is one of our most popular meetings of the year and we expect a large turnout. As always, the meeting is free and open to the public. We hope to see you there!

The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its October meeting Thursday, October 6th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. At this month's meeting we will watch a DVD highlighting the winners of the American Dahlia Society 2010 photo contest. This contest features an array of dahlias photographed across the nation ( be on the lookout during the DVD for an entry by one of our own members!).We will also have our last informal dahlia "show-and-tell" of the season as members bring in blooms to share. The meeting is free and open to the public

The 48th Annual LCDS Dahlia Show -It's a Wrap!

On the weekend of September 17-18th, the Lane County Dahlia Society held its 48th Annual Dahlia Show at the Wheeler Pavilion, at the Lane County Fairgrounds. We had over 40 exhibitors from Oregon & Washington stage and enter 1,500+ dahlia blooms, baskets, and arrangements. The building was ablaze with color and beauty.

After a whole morning spent judging and narrowing down the best of the best, the Head Table was soon displaying the top dahlias. The beautiful mass arrangement on top of the Head Table was created by Eleanor Shantz.

One of the highlights of our show this year was the arrangement category in honor of our late member Alfretta Spores. The arrangements were to use blooms in the colors of pink & purple and we were thrilled with the number of folks who entered. It was such a lovely tribute to a wonderful lady.

Lastly, Cheryle Hawkins, our Show Chair and Michael Canning ,our Judges Chair with their winning triple entry of "Nick Senior". Well done!

Entries accepted Friday September 16th from 6 PM - 8:00 PM and Saturday September 17th from 6:30 AM to 8:45 AM. All exhibitors must check in at the registration table. The judges meeting will start at 9:00 AM sharp and judging will commence at 9:30 AM.

The show will open to the public from Noon until 6 PM on Saturday and from 10 Am until 4 Pm on Sunday. Please come, bring a camera and enjoy the show! Free Admission! The public is encouraged to vote for the People's Choice special entry and there will be a staffed information table to answer any questions. We look forward to seeing you!

At this month's meeting Eugene Kenyon & Sonia Hall will give a demonstration on saving seed from dahlias. They will also talk about their unique hybridizing programs and explain the "magic" behind the creation of new dahlia varieties.. The Lane County Dahlia Society will hold its August meeting Thursday, August 4th at 7:30 PM at the Celeste Campbell Center, 155 High Street, Eugene. This month's meeting will focus on how to enter a bloom in a dahlia show and how to exhibit at the Fair. We will discuss how to improve bloom quality on your plants, how to transport blooms safely to a show, and demonstrate how to stage a 1-bloom and 3-bloom exhibit. We will also have an informal dahlia "show-and-tell" as members bring in blooms to share. The meeting is free and open to the public. Free refreshments will be provided. July Potluck

Last Thursday evening, members of the Lane County Dahlia Society gathered for the annual members & friends potluck. As usual, the tables were soon groaning under a delicious assortment of salads, main dishes and deserts.

Besides the opportunity of sampling so many wonderful dishes, this fun evening gives members the chance to talk and really get to know one another. Of coarse dahlias were the number one topic of the night!

Thanks to all of the LCDS members and guests who brought dishes and friendship to share.

This Saturday, May 14th, will be the last tuber sale of the year held by the Lane County Dahlia Society. The sale will take place from 9 AM until 3 PM and will be located at the Key Bank on River Road. The address is 1960 River Road. Key Bank is located right in front of the Bi-Mart, just south of the Beltline Expressway. Please come early for the best selection. Time: The Auction will start at 7:30 sharp, to be followed by open table sales approx. 1 hour later
What: Choice dahlia tubers will be auctioned off and sold to support the activities of the Lane County Dahlia Society. After the auction, there will be tables loaded with different dahlia tubers for sale. There will be free door prizes throughout the evening, as well as free refreshments. The Lane County Dahlia Society's 47th Annual Show

The Lane County Dahlia Society invites you to attend our 47th Annual Dahlia Show at the Wheeler Pavilion, at the Lane County Fairgrounds. July Potluck

Instead of our regular meeting with program, the Lane County Dahlia Society hosted a Members Only Potluck in July. The day dawned grey and cloudy and as we ate a few showers traveled through the area. We set up inside the Campbell Center, instead of outside, but otherwise the evening went off without a hitch. Over 30 members came to enjoy an amazing 3 tables worth of main dishes, salads and desserts. The room was filled with laughter and friendship. Thanks to everyone who came and brought a dish to share. It was a really nice evening.

Lynn Dudley Award Winner Announced

The Lane County Dahlia Society was thrilled to learn that Don C. a Miniature White Cactus has won the 2009 Lynn Dudley award. This award is annually given to the highest scoring minature fully double bloom on the ADS seedling bench. Don C. was hybridized by the late Dick Canning, longtime member of the Lane County Dahlia Society. This past year Don C. was grown and entered in shows throughout Oregon by Dick's son Michael Canning and by Wayne and Eleanor Shantz. Pictured above is a basket entry of Eleanor's.

Dick let the bees help him with his hybridizing efforts so the only known parent of Don C. is Mary Jo (M C Pk). Don C. will be introduced this coming year by Ted Kennedy at Hollyhill Dahlias

November Meeting - Digging & Dividing

This past Thursday, The L.C.D.S. held its last meeting of the year. Although it was a very rainy night outside, 48 folks filled the Campbell Center. We began the evening with our business meeting, followed by our door prize. Sue P. brought a beautiful ceramic bowl and a large packet of Spring bulbs as the giveaway which was won by a very happy Terri M. The program began with an overview of the entire process of digging dahlia tubers, dividing them and then storing them for the Winter. Anne P., pictured above, gave a great talk. After delicious refreshments, provided by Gen H. & Suku A., the group divided around 5 demonstration tables.

Each group was lead by a knowledgeable L.C.D.S. members who had brought clean dahlia tuber clumps from their garden. Here Art R. demonstrates. Art's table was covered with healthy, large tuber clumps.

Above, Wayne S. shares his experience with eager participants. After each clump was divided by the demonstrators, observers were invited to take home a free tuber. This always is a hit with our visitors and members.

2009 LCDS Annual Dahlia Show - It's a Wrap!

The weekend of September 19th-20th, the Lane County Dahlia Society held its 46th Annual Dahlia Show. This year our venue moved to the Wheeler Pavillion at the Lane Events Center. This space proved to be a wonderful place to hold a show.

The room was full of beautiful dahlia blooms. It was literally a sea of color and our many visitors were awe-struck!
